Nobody really knew exactly what went on inside McCauley Steam & Hydraulic Packing… only that if something leaked, rattled, hissed, or threatened to shut down an entire factory — this was where it eventually arrived.

Established sometime before the war (depending on who you asked), McCauley manufactured the unseen but absolutely essential parts of industry: gaskets, jointing, pump rings, and packing seals — the quiet heroes that kept steam plants running, ships moving, and locomotives from spraying hot oil across the shop floor.

The building itself grew the way successful industrial businesses always did — one expansion at a time. A new gable added when orders increased. Another when the rail siding came through. And one more after the infamous winter of ’48, when a frozen pump failure shut down half the district and McCauley worked three days straight under floodlights to machine replacement seals.

Old timers still claim that sometime around 2 a.m., with steam drifting from roof vents and boxcars waiting outside, a foreman backed a delivery truck straight through the loading dock doors — then finished his shift anyway.

Architecturally, the structure reflects that layered industrial evolution. Its striking quintuple-gable brick façade immediately commands attention, creating a dramatic skyline presence perfect for trackside industry or dense manufacturing districts.
